I took a dehydrating class last night. I’m hoping to try out my new skills with the peppers and slicing tomatoes. We’ll have the corn and beans for dinner. This lettuce will go into salads for Stephen. It’s not my favorite variety (leathery romaine), but it won’t go to waste. I’ll pair it with some feta and cherry tomatoes an add a bit of basil balsamic vinaigrette. I currently have a mound of onions that need chopped and froze so these will get added to that project. I was hoping for zucchini since I found a recipe for cornbread that uses it. I think I’ll be making it this week.

I’m glad I get a small share early in the week. It tends to pair well with my large share that I get on Fridays. It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over.

Hi, there! My role here at Life Lyn Style is usually limited to the background, but with Lyn enjoying herself in a tropical paradise, it is up to me (her loving husband) to share what we found in our Geauga Family Farms CSA today. The harvest season is upon us, with the bountiful crop we found in the box today.

First off, here is the group shot. I’ll bet we could measure how big the week’s harvest is by how high we have to hold the camera to take this picture. The camera was pretty close to the ceiling today.

“I’m ready for my closeup,” cried the kale, and I was happy to oblige.

Red Russian kale, bok choy

Garlic, sweet potatoes

Apples (mixed varieties), carrots

Parsley (mix of flat leaf and curly), green beans

Bell peppers, little peppers (I don’t know yet if they are hot)

Eggplant, yellow squash

Tomatoes

Using this up with Lyn away is going to be a challenge. My cooking skills have rusted a bit in recent years, with the grill more my specialty than the stove is. The parsley says “tabouli”, which could use some tomato and onion as well. The kale and bok choy I will saute, with some balsamic vinegar for the kale and some sesame oil for the bok choy. We will surely have some delicious salads as well.

Thanks for visiting! Lyn will be back tomorrow.

Today we traveled to Walnut Drive Gardens in Mogadore, Ohio. Mogadore is southeast of Akron and it is about 55 minutes from our house in Mayfield Heights. Usually, we keep our picking to 45 minutes or closer, but we were meeting friends to pick and I like to go to Duma Meats a couple of times a year. They are only a couple of minutes further than the farm.

We arrived at the farm at exactly 9AM. I thought we were going to be late between an empty fuel tank and a need for the ATM on our way to the highway, but the traffic was reasonable. The kids loved the market building since there was a sand box at the entrance. It kept them quite busy.

With Nick still in potty training mode, a restroom with running water is also a plus. Soon, we were at the raspberry bushes. The picking was plentiful and so were the mosquitos. I was glad that I had the bug repellent with us, but the kids still had a few bites near their feet and necks.

We also wanted to pick peppers. The pepper picking was at field two. We paid for our raspberries and headed over the other field. It was about 5 minutes down the road. The fields were marked with the type of pepper. I was interested in yellow sweet and some green peppers.

They give you a 5 gallon bucket to use to pick and then you transfer the peppers when you are done. It was really quick picking! Our friends Debbie and Sarah are pictured with their buckets.

I ended up picking 2 buckets’ worth. They were $9 a bucket. I think that is a great price, especially for gorgeous peppers. The raspberries were $3.25 a pound and we paid $8.29. So, we picked about two and a half pounds of berries.

All in all, it was quite a successful outing. We had a great time.
