Today was the first pick up for the Fresh Fork CSA.  We were expecting the following items.

Small CSA:

  • 1 whole pasture raised chicken, 4-5 lbs
  • 2 lbs organic cornmeal
  • 1 bunch cilantro
  • 1 bunch radishes with tops
  • 1 head assorted leaf lettuce (approx .5 lbs)
  • 2 hydroponic cucumbers
  • 1 quart farmstead yogurt

Farming is never an exact science, here’s what we received:

So, I think we have tomatoes instead of radishes and one cucumber instead of two.  Update:  the tomatoes were in place of one cucumber and we were shorted radishes.  We’ll get our radishes next week.

Here’s our current plan of attack:

The chicken is frozen and we put it in our freezer.  I cleaned the lettuce so it’s ready for salad.  Nick is excited to make corn muffins with the corn meal.  I chopped and froze the cilantro in ice cube trays.  The yogurt will be useful in overnight oats.  We already ate our cucumber at dinner.  It was small (think pickling cucumber), but delicious!  The only thing I’m not sure about is the tomatoes.  I’m sure I’ll figure out a good use for them or I’ll freeze them for later in the season.

We never made it to the JCC today.  Sally was up for a couple of hours last night.  We lose 2 nights of sleep per new tooth.  Last night, she got a molar.  We ran errands today and then played at the playground.  Nick rode his bike and Sally took a tricycle, but ended up walking.  They were both exhausted when we came home and took great naps.  Sally slept for almost 4 hours.  Nick slept for almost 3.  I was in heaven.

By the time everyone was aware and ready, there was not enough time left for a gym workout.  We headed to another park and then to pick up our Fresh Fork CSA.

After dinner, the family went out on our bikes.  Instead of just riding around the neighborhood, we ran errands.  Stephen rode his recumbent with Nick and Sally in the Burley trailer and I rode my single.  We rode to Target and Michael’s to pick up a few items that we’ve needed for a while.  It was great to get a ride in (about 4 miles total) and check something off the to do list at the same time.

Next up: physical therapy in the morning.

Today, we ventured to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History to check out the Little Builders exhibit.  It was GREAT.  We arrived about 5pm and Nick and Sally were the only ones at the exhibit.  We were greeted by Dane and Amanda.  They work at the admissions desk Wednesday evenings and we see them often.

The exhibit is full of items that turn, stack, move and topple!

Since the exhibit is open until September, I think we’ll get to know it well.

Today, I had another session of physical therapy in the pool.  It was very similar to my last workout in the pool.  The goal is to be moving and it’s easy on the joints.  I did walking forward, backward, sideways, squats, step ups, knee lifts, hamstring curls, bicycling, etc.  It was my last pool session.  The physical therapist thinks that I might not need land therapy after this week.  That would be GREAT!

My knee feels so much better.  I rested it over the weekend and I can tell.  The lateral movement is still sore and sometimes painful, so it’s certainly still needs work, but it’s not painful all day and that’s HUGE!

Next up: “real” workout tomorrow.  I’m shooting for 30 minutes on the elliptical, physical therapy land exercises and hopefully some arms (biceps, triceps, lat pull down, row, fly).

We enjoy eating fresh, local food whenever practical.

For the past couple of years, our family has participated in a local CSA.  CSA stands for community supported agriculture.  Traditionally, it has meant that farmers (or groups of farmers) sell shares of their crop to individuals.  The individuals pay up front and it allows the farmer to purchase seeds, marketing etc. before the season begins.  The consumer assumes some of the risk with weather etc. and receives a share of the crop each week during the season.  This model has morphed into many different programs all.

For summer 2011, my family is participating in two CSAs.  We love eating local foods and it’s good for us in many ways.  I plan to write about our our produce and how we use it all season long.

Geauga Family Farms is one of our CSAs.  You can read how they describe it here. We participated in this CSA last year.  This is a group of Geauga county farmers that combine efforts to provide us with mostly organic, seasonal produce for 20 weeks from June – Oct.  This year, we will be picking up on Tuesdays at Whole Foods on Chagrin Blvd.  We are looking forward to the start of the season.  The photo above shows the variety of items that we enjoyed in 2010.

Fresh Fork Market is our other CSA.  This one is set up quite differently from the GFF one.  Trevor Clatterbuck runs the program.  He partners with many farms and local producers to provide a variety of local produce and other products.  We participated in this CSA for the winter and really enjoyed the variety of items (including meat, cheese, grains, etc.)  We’ll be picking this bounty up at Beachwood High School on Thursdays this summer.  We’ll have a pick up for 22 weeks beginning this Thursday.

Today, we had another birthday party to attend.  We decided to ride our bikes.  Nick and Sally rode in the trailer that Stephen towed and I rode my single.  Our friends with the birthday girl live just over 2 miles away.  We had a great time at the party.  There were lawn games and birthday hats.

And of course, the birthday girl! (who was not at all interested in the cupcake!)

We left to ride home.  Even though it was starting to sprinkle, we detoured to Rite Aid to buy milk.  It’s a good thing that the trailer has a cargo area.  We dodged a bit of lightening on the way home, but the downpour came after we were all settled inside.  My computer on the bike needs a new battery, but I estimate that we rode a little less than 6 miles.  The knee feels worked, but good.

Next up:  no concrete plans for tomorrow.  Smile
