My day started out with a Local Flora class at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.  We had a brief classroom session and then headed on a field trip to take a look at live plants and trees.  We talked and walked around for a couple of hours.  It was a great learning experience and we didn’t get wet.

After the class, I headed to the Cleveland Marathon, 1/2 Marathon and 10K race expo.  My 2 sisters and mom are running along with a bunch of other people that I know.

I met my family at the expo. My mom and dad and all four siblings don’t get together very often.  My youngest sister lives out of town and my brother is moving this week for a coop job.  We took the opportunity for a few photos.

Erin traveled into town with my sister.  I’ve met her before a few times and I am staying with her when I go to Fit Bloggin’ next week.

My family and friends are all doing the 1/2 marathon (13.1 miles).  I think that the weather will be less than ideal with rain predicted most of the race.  Erin and I are spectating and I’m leaving the house really early to take a train downtown and arrive around 6am.  The race starts at 7am.  I hope everyone has a GREAT run.

Today’s workout was the afternoon BOSU class.  We had a few new faces today.  That’s always nice to see.  I implemented some of the modifications that Kim and I discussed yesterday and my foot seems fine.  Don’t get me wrong, I still have planter fascitiis and will have it for some time.  I don’t feel like I did any further damage to it today and that’s great news.

The class itself goes so fast and that’s a sign of a great class.  We keep moving and working and it never gets boring.  The class is roughly divided between warm up, step, legs, arms, abs and stretching.

Next up: hoping to get out the door in time for the 8:30am water aerobics class.

Today’s workout was Beth’s spin class.  I rocked it!

I warmed up with some back extensions and abdominal work and then headed to class.  Beth brought a great mix of songs.  The mood in her class is always so upbeat.

The rest of the day was spent hanging out at home, making some whole wheat banana bread and cleaning.

It was a great day.

Today was a busy day.  It was almost 60 degrees and sunny.  That’s been a missing combination in North Eastern Ohio lately.  I started the day with a haircut.  It was nice and relaxing.

Then, the family and I headed to Holden Arboretum.  We had planned earlier in the week to do something outside on Saturday, based on the forecast.  We knew that our Botanical Gardens membership would give us free admission.  However, when we arrived, we quickly figured out it was Arbor Day and admission was free for everyone.

Here’s Nick enjoying the machines at the mobile sawmill and Sally enjoying her snack in the car as we headed home.

I spent the afternoon making whole wheat pumpkin ravioli.  I froze some and we had some for dinner.  It actually turned out quite well and I learned a lot from practice.

After dinner, we headed to the North Chagrin Reservation, specially the Duck Pond.  Nick and Sally enjoyed the frog and toad statues.  But, we saw many more geese than ducks.

It was an active and very nice day with the family.

Next up: cardio in the morning.

I planned a cardio workout today and that plan was put into action.  I completed 30 solid high intensity minutes on the elliptical.  My legs feel great, but my arms are sore from yesterday.

Since I had a shorter workout today, I took a few minutes to clean out my purse before I picked up the kids from Kid Kare.  I found 2 lonely jelly beans in the bottom of my purse.  I’ve been trying to not eat refined sugar or white flour since Monday, so, I tossed the jelly beans in the nearest trash can.  Spiced jelly beans are superb, but these were not in my plan.  It was a nice victory.

After we left the JCC, the kids and I dodged the rain drops and made a trip to Whole Foods.  Nick was disappointed because the waterfall wasn’t working.  We picked up a few items like bananas because they were actually yellow, mesa marina corn meal for corn tortillas and pepitas black bean burger recipe.

Next up: BOSU sculpt class tomorrow afternoon

I had my trainer workout with Chelsea today.  It’s been a week since I did weight training and 3 weeks since I trained with her.  After my long weekend off and spinning yesterday, I was tired today.  I got a good night sleep, but my body was tired.  Also, it was finally hot today.  It was already 60 degrees when we left for the JCC and the workout room was much hotter than normal as a result.

I warmed up on the elliptical for 20 minutes and almost emptied my water bottle.  I don’t ever have to refill after only 20 minutes.

The workout:

  • Lunge and Press: 10 lbs (the second half was plain lunges… tired)
  • Pliet Squat: 20 lbs (about 20)
  • Cross Body Woodchop: 10 lb ball (20 on each side)
  • Abdominal ball–>knee touch: 8 lb ball (1 minute)
  • Chest Press: 15 lbs DB (2 sets of 10-15)
  • Shoulder Press: 8 lbs DB (2 sets of 10-15)
  • Plank (minimal, I was really weak today)
  • Bicep Curl: 12 lbs (1 set of 15 against the wall to isolate the muscle)
  • Tricep Dips (I try, but can’t really do these, so we used a 15lb dumbbell and did a different triceps exercise.

When I finished with Chelsea, I did 3 sets of 10 back extensions with a 10lb plate and then stretched.  I feel pretty good now, but I am guessing I’ll be sore in the morning.

Next up: cardio workout (probably elliptical)

We all had a great weekend and we are exhausted.  It’s a good thing tomorrow is Monday and we can rest with the JCC and spin class.

We were expecting rainy weather today, but we were pleasantly surprised and happy to have a sunny day in the 70’s.  We started our day at the Botanical Gardens to see the Daffodil Show.  We were a bit disappointed as the show really wasn’t quite set up yet while we were there.  We let the kids play and heard a couple of story hour books.  We stopped to look at the daffodils on our way out.  It looked like a contest where locals could bring their properly displayed flowers and have them judged in various categories.  I’m sure all of the varieties and criteria would be quite meaningful if you were into it.  We just like looking at them.  Daffodils are one of my favorite flowers.  This photo is from our yard this afternoon.

Here is Nick playing with the nature blocks.  Here is Sally on the swings at a local playground in Little Italy.  We stopped there on the way home to wear them out for naps.

After lunch and naps, we headed back down to University Circle and made our way back to the Natural History Museum.  Yes we were there yesterday.  We have a membership and we can bring guests.  It was also supposed to be rainy.  We met up with my sister and her family.

Here is Nick and his cousin.

We had a great time and after snacks outside by the dinosaur, we parted ways.  Our family had dinner at California Pizza Kitchen and now the sweet potatoes are in the oven in preparation for Easter dinner tomorrow.  It’s been a long and active day.  There’s plenty of fun planned for tomorrow as well.

Our friends Aaron, Jeanne and their daughter are in town visiting from Rome.  We met up with them at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.  We hadn’t seen them since December of 2009 and it was GREAT to catch up.  I’ve known Aaron since seventh grade and met Jeanne when I traveled to Africa for their wedding.  Needless to say, we are pretty good friends.  It was a fun outing.  Here are a few photos.

Here are Nick and Sally hanging out.  Both of them are sporting their new hair cuts.

We have a busy weekend planned.  I’m looking forward to sneaking in a quick workout or two before Monday’s spin class.

Today was a jam packed day for the kids and I.  We headed to the JCC this morning.  I got a great workout in on the elliptical.  I did a solid 30 minutes of high intensity.

We met a friend for lunch and had naps (myself included  :-)).  Then, we headed to the Barber Shop.

I had made an appointment for Sally and thought Nick could just do walk in service.  It worked out great.  There is one woman there who takes appointments and she has 2 girls, so I knew she’s be good for Sally.  Sally had her hair cut once before and it wasn’t the best experience.  Today, the key was a sucker.  The stylist gave her a sucker and she was mostly still throughout the haircut.  Nick is pretty versed in haircuts so he didn’t need my attention and the cuts actually overlapped a bit.  It was relatively painless and efficient.

I’ll try to post a photo tomorrow.

I ended the evening with Mom’s Night Out at a Japanese restaurant.  6 of us try to get together for dinner once a month.  We’ve been having MNO once a month since June of 2008.  We started out with 6 kids and now we have 13 between us.  It’s been a lot of fun.

Now, it’s bed time.  No planned workout tomorrow due to visitors from out of town, but we plan to be active.
