We decided to go to church service at 8AM.  Even with getting dressed up, we arrived at church 20 minutes early.  At home and again at church, I tried to get a great photo of the kids.  Hmmm…..

2012-04-08

After service, we enjoyed a pancake breakfast.  Nick was in the Sunday School Program at 10AM, so there was time for playing after breakfast.

Nick was paired up with an older student for his part in the program.

IMG_9819

After the Easter program, Nick tried on a friend’s hat.

IMG_9822

As we left, Nick wanted to hang up his name tag.  It’s so fun that he is very into letters and trying to figure out words.

I’ll have part 2 of our day tomorrow.

Today was the practice for tomorrow’s Sunday School Easter Program.  After the rehearsal, we enjoyed some activities for the kids.

Here’s Nick enjoying a craft and Sally enjoying some daddy time.

IMG_9725IMG_9728

After pizza was enjoyed, the kids played a few rounds of Duck, Duck, Bunny.  If you were tagged, you had to hop around the circle back to your seat.  It was fun.

IMG_9730

I love mid-air shots!

IMG_9731

There was also a brief story time.  The kids were definitely getting antsy waiting for the hunt!

IMG_9736

Soon enough, it was time to begin.  We had about 20 kids and each of them could hunt for about 19 eggs.  We had one room just for the 3 and under crowd to make sure they weren’t trampled.

IMG_9743IMG_9746

IMG_9748IMG_9749

It was nice and sunny outside, so many of the eggs could be found in the courtyard.

IMG_9750IMG_9751

It was a great day for photos.

IMG_9752

Every once in a while, Nick had to stop and count his eggs.

IMG_9753

Then, he’d get excited to find more.

IMG_9765

We had lots of happy hunters.

IMG_9761

After the hunt, the kids had fun opening the eggs.

IMG_9771IMG_9772

It was our first time participating in the church egg hunt.  We’ll definitely do it again next year.

I turned 41 today.  It’s just a number and I don’t really feel any older.

I spent most of the day at home with the kids.  We had 2 extra visiting this morning.  They brought me these beautiful flowers.

IMG_9700

Nick drove me nuts most of the day.  He was particularly winey all day.  It was extra tough since I have laryngitis.  It’s hard to read to kids and have normal conversation when you never know if actual words will come out when you speak.  I used to get laryngitis all of the time.  I’m glad it’s not as often and for shorter periods of time these days.

We ended up ordering a pizza for dinner.  Then, we headed out for my surprise.  After a trip to get Nick’s glasses fixed again, we went to Mitchell’s Ice Cream.  It’s turning into a birthday tradition in our household.  They have great ice cream.  It’s made locally.  And they have a train set for entertainment.

All in all it was a good day.  I’m looking forward to dinner out tomorrow to finish my birthday celebrating.

Around Christmas, I bought several craft kids for the kids.  I think most of the kids were 50 cents or less.  Although we have lots of general craft supplies, sometimes it’s nice to open a small package and have an instant project.  This wreath kit came with enough supplies for 2 wreaths and all I needed to provide was the glue (and an old Giant Eagle ad).

Nick and Sally didn’t care that they were making Christmas wreaths in March.  They are happy as clams as long as they can play with the glue!

I tried to help Sally learn to dab the glue with a toothpick.  It didn’t work too well.  She wanted more glue than a toothpick would allow.

IMG_9672IMG_9677

Nick agreed, he just wanted the whole bottle of glue to use on his project.  Both Nick and Sally had a great time and were busy for about 30 minutes.  After the wreaths were done, clean up was surprisingly easy.

IMG_9674IMG_9676

I’ve already started a list of school supplies to buy at the sales this summer.  Extra glue is definitely on my list!

Yesterday, we had a great time at Fiona’s birthday party.  Conveniently, it was at the JCC.  I was able to go after my lifeguarding class without any travel time.  Fiona’s mom always goes all out for her parties.  This one was no exception.

IMG_9653IMG_9573

The tables were set in pink with princess hats for the girls and crowns for the boys.  They also had little swords and wands.  It was very cute.  The cake looked amazing!  I didn’t have a piece, but it was disappearing from all of the plates.

IMG_9578IMG_9581

The kids enjoyed pizza and fruit before cake.  And, there were plenty of goodies to enjoy and take home.  A good part of the party was spent in the gym with inflatables.  There was a princess bounce house to go with the theme.

IMG_9583IMG_9589

The kids loved this slide.

IMG_9622IMG_9604

Sally took a ride on a tricycle.  Nick played some ball with dad.

IMG_9619IMG_9635

At one point, Stephen and I were standing by the slide and Nick came over.  He had lost his glasses and was very worried and sad.  With the help of a few parents and staff members, we eventually found them.  Nick told us that he lost them in the little bounce house, but we had a hard time finding them.  Turns out, the metal had caught on some of the mesh and they were hanging inside.  We were searching under the house, mats, cracks etc.  I was glad to find them since they aren’t cheap.

IMG_9622IMG_9617

Here’s a view from the track above looking down on the party.

IMG_9628

After play time and cake, it was piñata time.  There was a pink one for girls and a blue one for the boys.  I loved the string piñata.  Each child takes a string and you don’t know which one will open the trap door for the piñata to open.  It’s so much better than getting out the bats.

IMG_9644IMG_9639-001

The kids had a great time.  The JCC staff was great!  Thanks for sharing your birthday with us, Fiona.

My sister is thinking about a Lego party for my nephew’s birthday.  I got lots of ideas and inspiration at this party yesterday and spent some time on line learning about making piñatas.  I have so many ideas and so little extra time!

Yesterday, I happen to see the KidShow at Great Lakes Mall mentioned somewhere on the web.  I looked up a bit of information and decided it would be fun.  Today, Stephen, the kids and I headed to the mall and arrived at 10AM.  I always like to go early since the crowds aren’t as bad and our kids are at their prime.  The KidShow is basically a collection of many kid oriented vendors with tables of activities and information.  There was also a main stage with entertainment.

IMG_9457IMG_9463

We went in through the main entrance and made it as far as the cars that you put money in before they wanted to stop.  We talked them into just a quick try since the cars would always be there.  We never put money in the cars.  They still have fun!  Our first official stop was the Step 2 booth.  They had a play area set up and since we arrived early, there wasn’t a crowd yet.

IMG_9461IMG_9464

One of my favorite stops was for Widening World preschool.  We have other preschool plans for the kids, but this was an awesome booth.  It was inviting.  They had trucks and vehicles on the floor, recipes and literature on the tables, photos on the display boards, a tribute to Eric Carle with books and stuffed animals and a few awesome activity bins.  Nick and Sally were enjoying this one for play dough.  I picked up a recipe for homemade sidewalk chalk.  I can’t wait to make it with the kids this summer.

IMG_9487IMG_9484

Many of the booths had crafts and coloring.  Here Sally is making a book mark.  As we wondered, we ran into various characters.  Nick and Sally are pictures with a rhino here.

IMG_9480IMG_9505

Another favorite booth was for the local boy scouts.  They brought a display that included pinewood derby cars.  Since Stephen and I were both involved with scouts, it was fun to see Nick interested.  They picked out cars to race and eagerly watched for the finish.

IMG_9508IMG_9511

The Cleveland Children’s Museum brought these blocks for the kids.  Nick and Sally had fun playing with them.  The people at the booth challenged them to go through the tunnels.  Sally went through just fine.  Then Nick decided to add a block and then try.

IMG_9517IMG_9520

Surprise!  He knocked them all down.

IMG_9521IMG_9525

We finished with a couple of temporary tattoos before leaving their booth.  We took a break for lunch at Subway in the food court.

IMG_9529IMG_9534

After lunch, we finished with Nick’s two favorite activities.  The Great Lakes Science Center brought along a line following robot.  Nick loved it.  He would have played with it all day.

IMG_9544IMG_9551

IMG_9549IMG_9552

Our last stop was the Lake Captains booth where Nick and Sally had the opportunity to swing a plastic bat.

IMG_9540IMG_9555

To our surprise, Nick hit the first 3 balls in a row!

IMG_9557IMG_9565

We ended up staying at the KidShow for 3 hours.  We had fun and were exhausted when we left.  The show is in its 14th year and runs through Sunday, March 25th.

On March 3rd, the Mythic Creatures exhibit opened.  Last night, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History hosted a member-only evening to enjoy the exhibit, crafts, live animals and refreshments.  We arrived about 40 minutes early and enjoyed a picnic near the outside dinosaur.

Once the event opened, our first stop was for Nick and Sally to make dragon wing hats.  They loved wearing them around.

IMG_9180IMG_9345

They really enjoyed moving the different creature parts around on the felt board to create new creatures.  We had already been to the exhibit last week, but no photos are allowed.  There is also a new art exhibit that goes along with the mythic creature theme.

IMG_9348IMG_9349

After enjoying refreshments and making a dragon craft, we headed outside.  It has been so beautiful out.

IMG_9361IMG_9367

Per usual, Nick and Sally were jumping for joy!

IMG_9376

It’s so fun that they enjoy the museum so much!

Yesterday was the first beautiful, warm, weekend day that we have been able to enjoy outside.  After I got home from my lifeguarding class, we decided to head to the Duck Pond at the North Chagrin Reservation.  Near the Nature Center there are 2 ponds.  I’m not sure if either have a formal name, but we usually just say we’re going to the Duck Pond.  To Nick and Sally, that encompasses the entire area of 2 ponds, education building, nature center, etc.

We arrived to find a very full parking lot.  Lots of families were out enjoying the beautiful day.  Nick and Sally were happy to be in light jackets and hats.

IMG_9272IMG_9274

We arrived at the first pond to find tons of turtles enjoying the sun.  I can’t ever remember seeing turtles before.  And they were everywhere!

IMG_9278IMG_9279

Most of the turtles we saw were on logs in the pond.  The last one on the grass actually lives in the nature center.  Mindy brought him out so he could stretch his legs and get some fresh air.  She spent time talking to Nick and Sally about his favorite foods like worms and slugs.

IMG_9282IMG_9295

We enjoyed a walk around the big pond.  Nick and Sally stopped to look for fish.  Sally also posted for a photo with mommy.

IMG_9286IMG_9289

Sally is very intrigued by her shadow.  She was giggling and having a great time.

IMG_9292IMG_9293

After several hours in class and the indoor pool, it was so nice to be outside with the family for a while.  We ended the day with dinner with friends.

Today, we invited my parents up for a visit to Lake Farmpark.  It was a chilly and beautiful day.  My parents had never been to Lake Farmpark, so we had fun showing them around.

The first stop was the solar panel station just outside the main entrance.  Nick was happy to show grandma how it worked.  Nick and Sally both enjoyed the wagon ride.  No trip to Farmpark would be complete without a ride.

IMG_9189IMG_9190

One of my favorite parts of visiting this time of year is all of the baby animals.  It seems that every time you visit, there are some newborns that are just a few days old.

IMG_9195IMG_9200

After the barn visit we headed up to the Plant Science Building.  In honor of maple sugaring, there were a couple of crafts for the kids.

IMG_9202IMG_9207

The staff is always so friendly and these volunteers were no exceptions.  Lori helped Nick and Sally with rubbings of plants and spider webs.  Joe was happy to answer all of Nick’s questions about the aquaponics system.  He even brought out some fish food so we could try to see the Koi.  I’ve been to Farmpark many times and I never knew there were fish!  Thanks to Lori and Joe for being so great with the kids.

IMG_9208IMG_9209

Last year, we went up to the the sugar house too soon.  The park opens at 9AM, but we learned from experience that you don’t want to go until you see smoke!  After spending time with the above activities, we headed to the evaporator.  I was excited to try the maple stirs since we missed out on them last year.  Basically, they give you a serving of hot syrup and you mix air into it with your stirrer.  Once it’s cooled a bit and creamy, you enjoy it.  They were delicious.  For $1, it’s a unique treat.  Next time, I’ll remember to get them one or two at a time.  It was hard to stir ours and help the kids at the same time.  After we finished our treats, I purchased a gallon of maple syrup.  It was $48 minus our 10% discount.  That’s a good price for fresh, local, syrup.

IMG_9219IMG_9213

After we looked around at the displays for a bit, Stephen took Nick on a quick side trip to see some of the tree sap.

IMG_9217

In addition to the formal maple sugaring weekend, the quilts were still on display.  Quilts are amazing pieces of work.  We found ourselves wishing the creators listed how many hours they took.  I’m not sure how many quilts were on display, but it was well over 100.  They were spread out in several areas of the main building.

IMG_9223IMG_9224

The kids were both exhausted by the time we finished lunch and both took great naps.  It was a great family day.

Nick is still taking swim lessons.  He usually goes once a week on Thursday.  I’m so glad that he loves the water!  I think he is the class clown.  He always seems to be goofing around.  I talked to one of the instructors today.  She said he just likes the water.  I’m glad it doesn’t seem to bother her.  From my vantage point, he is always bobbing up and down and not paying attention.  I’ll keep letting him take lessons as long as he wants to swim.  It think it’s an important skill.

He’s getting much more comfortable in the water.  He also still loves his hooded towel when he gets out.

IMG_9185IMG_9188

My workout today included lots of swim practice.  I spent an hour in the pool and even had my own lane for a part of my workout.  I am mostly interested in building up my endurance at this point.  I used to need a nap after a great strength training workout or spin class.  Now, I need a nap after a long pool workout.  I’d love to have the stamina for 2-3 hours of a vigorous workout and not need a nap.  That’s a great goal for this year.

My practice today included:

  • quite a few laps of the crawl
  • a few lengths of the backstroke
  • a couple of lengths of the breaststroke kick with a kick board
  • a couple of lengths of just kicking on my back to simulate the dive brick test
  • 4 or 5 dives in the deep end to practice my hang time at the bottom for brick / victim retrieval
  • a length or two of breaststroke
  • ended with getting out of the pool without the ladder – it still isn’t pretty, but it was doable after the hour in the pool

I was having some trouble with my goggles.  I think it’s time for a new pair.  Maybe I’ll get a chance to shop this weekend.

My arms are a bit sore tonight.  I’m not sure if it’s from the swimming today or the strength workout yesterday.  It’s probably a combo.

I’m hoping for a nice day at Lake Farmpark with lots of walking tomorrow.  The second lifeguarding class is Sunday and we’ll be in the pool for a couple of hours again.
