I decided to try Robert Ullrey’s podcasts  for my C25K training.  He has mp3 files you can put on your iPod and he tells you when to walk and when to run, which I found much easier than trying to time myself.  Each recording is designed to be done 3 times.  Today, I did about 1/2 of the first one before it was time to meet with my trainer.

As luck would have it, Chelsea in addition to being a great trainer, is also a runner.  She runs quite a bit and is very knowledgeable.  After I told her that I was considering the 5K in May, we headed to the track for most of my workout.

We did lunges w/shoulder press and biceps curl using 10lb dumbbells across the fitness center and back.  Then she had me carry a BOSU over my head to the track.  The track is down the hall and upstairs from the fitness center.  I didn’t make it the whole way, but it was a gallant effort.  They are actually pretty heavy when you try to hold it high while you walk down the hall.

We alternated running (think very slow jog) laps with some exercises near the track.  We did presses with the BOSU, plank on the BOSU, plank on the BOSU (flat side up)  while bringing a leg up off the ground, push ups on the BOSU, wood chops, etc.  Between the exercises and the jogging, I was tired and very sweaty at the end of my workout.

Chelsea timed a couple of my laps and figured I’m at at 17 min mile.  So, it will probably take me about 50-55 min to complete the 5K.  I’m not expected to pick up much pace between now and May.  She really wanted me to see where I was and I appreciate that.  I hate the idea of being last or running without others around.  My friend Erin has offered to run the 5K with me and that’s so sweet of her.  I’m checking to make sure that’s OK with the Fit Bloggin’ crew.

Chelsea also asked how my other workouts were going.  We talked about spinning.  I was taking a spin class 2-3 times per week.  Lately, it hasn’t worked out with my schedule.  Monday is always spinning.  My best chance at a second class is Wednesday.  Last week, I chose to do a eSpinner workout because the timing was better.  The week before, I did a regular cardio class.  But, the bottom line is that I get a better workout when I take the spinning class.  I estimate that my cardio class or eSpinner workouts are about 80% of what I get in a spinning class.  The key is intensity.  I really need 4-5 higher intensity cardio workouts.

With the addition of the C25K, I really need to make sure that I stretch, listen to my body and get one solid rest day plus one “easier” workout day per week.  I need to spend some time evaluating my workout schedule.

Next up: atypical Wednesday off from the J.  I’m scheduled to see a trama simulation and tour a life flight helicopter.

I already knew that I had an awesome week before I went to Weight Watchers today.  I try hard not to let the scale tell me if my week was good.  But, I am still ecstatic to see progress at the scale, especially when it is such a huge back on track number like 9.2 pounds.  I’m now pretty close to my lowest weight since I had my daughter.  Let the ups and downs of the last few weeks end and the downward trend continue!

Besides the obvious numbers, I just felt good great this week.  It’s amazing what a few days away from jelly beans, peanut butter eggs and other junk can do for my mood and demeanor in general.

This week was all about the following quote:

“If you kind of do it, it kind of works.  If you really do it, it really works.”

My sister said this to me at dinner on Saturday.  I thought about it many times this week as I measured , weighed and wrote down every bite.  Thanks!

Here’s a quick story about my recent Whole Foods trips.

Last Thursday, I was there with the kids, we were all hungry.  It was lunch time.  I tried to get some lunch meat from the deli counter, but the kids were screaming and the service was not going to be quick enough.  We I grabbed a bag of New York Style Cheddar Potato chips and the kids and I munched on them while we shopped.  The points value of the chips did not even cross my mind.  At the end of the trip, we shared a piece of pizza (that wasn’t very good) from the pizza counter along with a can of soda and a mini torte.  Remember, we were at WHOLE FOODS with access to so much great food.

Today, we went to Whole Foods.  We were hungry.  I grabbed a container of cubed cheese, some bananas and a piece of Challah bread.  The kids nibbled on cheese and bread.  I had 3 cubes of cheese and I knew they were about 1 point each.  (I even weighed a couple  at home to confirm.)  After we checked out, we all shared a banana.  SCORE!

Both trips were still better than eating McDonald’s in the car, but today feels good.  The kids were happy and fed upon arrival back home and my snacked tied me over until my dinner with lots of veggies once they were in bed.

No exercise to speak of today, but the dishes are done and the laundry is caught up and that’s a productive day.

Next up: trainer workout with Emily in the morning.

Today, I tried the eSpinner for the second time.  I really like it!  You can read about my first experience here.  I used my own music from my Ipod instead of listening to the coach.  It was really easy to stay motivated to my own play list.  I’ve been really paying attention to my cadence since I’m going to train for a century (hopefully on our Rans Screamer) with my husband for this September.  He likes to spin at 80-90 RPM and I want to be ready.

I ended up completing a 55 min workout, 17.9 miles, 689 calories and 73 average cadence.  I only have a cadence around 45-50 when I am standing, so my average sitting was right in the zone.  That’s especially good since you don’t stand when you are riding a SCREAMER.

Today, I warmed up with some ab work (2 sets of 40 reps at 105 pounds) and some back extensions (2 sets of 10, holding a 6 pound ball and doing side twists at the top of each rep).

Then, SPIN class with Beth.  Beth had a different mix today and it was great as usual.  I did have one problem.  I had to use the bathroom about 1/2 way through the class.  I decided to hold off until it was over, but it was quite the distraction.  I spent most of the class debating whether I should run down stairs to the bathroom or wait until class was over.  I wasn’t sure that I’d want to come back in the middle, so I just stuck it out.  I did bolt out once we finished.

Next week, Beth will be on spring break in Costa Rica.  She told us that she’d be thinking of us.

Next up: trainer session with Chelsea in the AM.

Today, I had my normally scheduled trainer workout with Chelsea.

We did a pretty normal set including abs, fly, deltoids, lat pull down, row, lunges.  Then, we also did the bench press.  I was able to do the bar (about 45 pounds).  I was excited.  That’s an odd way to hold weight and I could not have done that a few weeks ago.

Edited to include list, most were 2 sets:
Rear Delt: 60 lbs
Pec Fly: 75 lbs
Row: 60 lbs
Lat Pull: 70 lbs
Lunges: length of room
Leg Ext: 20 lbs single leg
Shoulder Press: 30 lbs
Plank on ground: 33 sec
Abdominal Machine: 115 lbs
Bench Press: bar only

Tonight, we had our last Biggest Loser Workout.  The format was the same as most of the others.  Small groups were at stations and when we weren’t at a station, we were moving around the gym.  The stations included things like push ups, squats, shoulder press, Russian twists, reverse crunches, row, step ups on the BOSU, knee lifts, etc.  Each station was for 1 min 15 sec.  In between these exercises we walked around the gym (most jogged – I walked) and occasionally, we did things like slides, hopping/stepping etc. to shake it up a bit.  Our trainers were Ryan and John and Rich was there to cheer us on.

I’m already sore!  I usually SPIN on Wednesday, but I forgot to do the laundry, so I may have a plan B of the elliptical or the cardio dance class instead.

I weighed in for BL today.  I was down 4 pounds from last week.  So, with one week left, I have lost 15.75 pounds.  I have no idea what my inches or body fat will be when I weigh in next week.  I am assured to not win the big prize, but hopefully one of my friends will win.  I think I still could have a shot at inches or body fat categories since my clothes are all too big.  I’m going to try and be extra “on it” this week.  I’d like to finish the contest with a 20 pound loss.

Today’s SPIN class was great as usual.  I was surprised to see so many empty bikes.  Usually, on a school holiday, we get lots of teachers who have the day off.  That didn’t seem to happen today… but it could have been all of the ice.  Hubby and I chiseled for 25 min to clear enough ice to load and drive.

I didn’t make an effort to get to the gym today.  Instead, I spent the day cleaning.  So, I got lots of activity.  After dinner, I went shopping.  I managed to get a bit of lifting in as well – in the form of 4 gallons of milk, a jug of OJ, 6 packs of soda for hubby and a dozen packs of diapers.  I’m beat.

Tomorrow I have a trainer workout with Chelsea.

Today was a scheduled off day from the gym.  The last thing I needed was an off day after the week we’ve had.  We opted for short bursts of outside fun.  The kids and I headed to WW.  It was nice to go today since I missed the meeting last week.

Since it was 55 degrees, we opted for parking extra far away.  The meeting is in the back of a plaza.  It’s probably 1/4 mile or so from where we parked to the meeting.  I’ll have to wear my pedometer some day to double check.  We park and walk along the stores down to the meeting location.  My son usually runs ahead and my daughter rides in the stroller.  It was a beautiful day for it.

I’m not sure it’s worth going day by day for a recap this week.  But, I was down 4.2 pounds.  Although some of that was “jeans”, so was not and that felt good.  I’m not quite back to my lowest since my daughter was born, but I’m close.

The meeting was about your dream kitchen.  We talked all about what tools need to be employed in the kitchen to be successful on program.  I think a separate post is in order for my kitchen set up.  More to come.

At the end of the meeting, we made the trek back to the car.

After a haircut for my son, we walked over to the grocery store and picked up some YELLOW bananas (boy are they hard to find) and walked back.

After nap time, we played outside.  The kids enjoyed the dry black top near the garage.  I enjoyed taking the trash out, sweeping the driveway and picking up the trash near our curb.

It was a busy and active day.  I’m looking forward to a gym workout at the JCC tomorrow.

I was supposed to workout with my trainer this morning and then go back for the Biggest Loser workout this evening.  Instead, spent the day sick in bed after being up all night.  Finally, I can keep food down and I hope to be 100% tomorrow.  I hated to miss today, but my body told me otherwise.  I don’t think I couldn’t have driven to the J today let alone worked out.  I think I need to allow myself more rest.  I’m not sure if that is more rest days from exercise or more sleep in general.  For now, I feel really drained and I’m almost ready to call it a day.

Uneventful, but great SPIN class with Beth.

I did two sets of back extension (body weight) 10 reps and two set of 30 abs at 90 pounds before class.  It works well to set up my bike (reserve a spot) and then go to the fitness center for a few minutes.

I also weighed in for the BL contest.  I was up .25 from last week.  I expected worse.  I found out that another female is down 23 (twice as much as I) and she started out much lighter.  She’s been doing a really low (close to no) carb diet and competing heavily with her husband, so the stakes are high for her.  I’m pretty much assured to not win the big prize, but I suspect I’ll have a chance at inches or % body fat.  Only 2 more weeks.
