As we were getting ready to go to the J today, thunderstorms rolled in.  We delayed our departure since it was storming and dark.  We ended up getting there about 1/2 later than normal.  My knee was a bit sore today from bicycling with Nick in the trailer on Sunday.   So, today’s workout was all for rehab.

I did 10 minutes on the elliptical, 40 minutes on the Nu Step and my PT floor exercises.  I’ve also been up and down the stairs all day taking care of the kids and my husband.  Tonight, I feel great.

Next up: strawberry picking the morning and workout in the PM.

Today was a crappy food day.  I didn’t really eat fruit or veggies and I was in the mood for chips.  Yuck!  They don’t even taste very good to me.

Breakfast
pumpkin Kodiak cakes w/maple syrup
Morning Snack
piece of cheese
Lunch
prosciutto
potato chips
mushrooms
Dinner

toast

Today was a long day.  My husband had surgery this morning and everything went well.

We had a hard time finding a sitter for the kids after our original plan didn’t work out.  Thanks to some good friends, we had coverage until 1pm.  We ran around the house this morning getting ourselves ready, cleaning up the house, making lunch for the kids, etc.

It was hectic to say the least.  We arrived at the surgery center and then waited.  They took him back for prep and I waited.  I got to see him before surgery and we waited.  They took him to the OR and then I waited again.

At 1pm, he was in recovery and our sitter dropped the kids off.  Then, the kids and I waited.  They played in the waiting room for a while, and we only had one meltdown.  After the meltdown, I retrieved the DVD player from the car and the rest of the waiting went much better.

At 3:30pm, we finally arrived at home.  We got everyone settled and then I ate lunch.  A bit later, we went and filled prescriptions, bought milk, and stopped to pay a bill.

At some point, when I was checking on my husband, I heard some commotion from the living room.  I’m not sure what happened, but it ended with Sally stepping on Nick’s glasses.  Instead of making dinner, we headed to the glasses store where we waited for someone to fix the glasses.

I was happy when bed time for the kids came and I’m happy that my husband is doing well.  I hope I can do something other that wait tomorrow.

Next up: plan to go to the J for a good workout in the morning.

Stephen and I met bicycling.  So, we love it.  It’s only natural for us to want to bicycle with the kids.  Our friends from Minnesota gave us a Burley trailer a few years back.  It’s great, but both kids together are not comfortable.  Nick is just too big.  So, we’ve been investigating the  I-Go, Trail A Bike, Co-Pilot, and others to be able to take the kids bicycling.

Today, we decided to venture down to Century Cycles in Peninsula.  They have a rental business out of that location and they have the I –Go that you can try out.  We almost were too late to rent it for today (by 5 minutes), but they made an exception.  We were looking to buy it.  We really weren’t there to rent it.  I think that made the difference.

We really thought we would love the I-Go and we were right.  It was really easy to ride this with Nick.  Stephen will be pulling Sally in the other trailer, so we are really looking for a package deal where Nick and I are comfortable riding.  I like that Nick is in a comfortable seat that is close to the ground.  He’s also buckled in like a car seat.  I love that I don’t feel like he’ll be falling out.  We would love to buy one, but we need to figure out transport first.  We also need more spec information first.  I’ll keep you all posted.

We rode about 5 miles total (from Peninsula to Boston and back).  Sally and Nick were both happy as we finished.

Maybe it was playing in the dirt or seeing the train.  I’d like to think the smiles were from riding.

Today, we went to the zoo.  We are members of the Akron Zoo thanks to a Groupon purchase earlier in the year.  When we activated our membership, they gave us a coupon for $5 for our family of 4 to go to the Cleveland Zoo.  The zoos are no longer 100% reciprocal with each other and the coupon is a way of helping out the members.

We arrived at the zoo just before they opened.  We wanted to get there early because the kids are early birds, it’s not too hot and it’s not too crowded.  Mission accomplished.

Although we trekked up to the primates area, saw the koalas and a few other animals, this visit was all about the return of the elephants.  It seems like it took forever to rebuild the new elephant home.  It turned out great and we enjoyed seeing them inside and out.

We enjoyed 2 perfect hours at the zoo that ended with eating our picnic lunch in the shelter.  It was a nice and active day.

Today was my last physical therapy appointment.   As I suspected, my knee just needs more time and I need to continue the exercises.  I just don’t need the therapist to stand there and watch me do step ups or calf raises.  So, my 2 future appointments have been cancelled and I can call in a few weeks and go back if I deem it necessary.

Tim did give me a couple of new exercises to help with balance and lateral strength.  They are hard to describe, but involve standing on one foot and having the other foot move around while under tension.

I’m happy with my progress and just need to remain patient as the knee continues to heal.  I’m hoping to go strawberry picking soon and I don’t want my knee to be trouble.

After my PT appointment, I did 15 minutes on the elliptical.  I’ll be slowing increasing my time as my knee allows.  In a couple of weeks, I hope to work on increasing the intensity.

Next up:  day off with the family.

Lunch
2 hard boiled eggs
10 olives
